SpaceX plans $100 billion Starship complex in Louisiana
SpaceX wants to build a very large rocket launch center in southern Louisiana.
The site would cover about 125,000 acres.
Building could start in 2027, and the first Starship launch could happen in 2029.
The center could eventually handle thousands of launches each year.
It would have facilities for fuel, electricity, shipping, and preparing rockets.
SpaceX says the site would help launch satellites and support future space missions.
The project could create more than 3,000 jobs.
However, the land is also an important home and stopover for wildlife and birds.
SpaceX says much of the wetlands would stay natural and that it would help restore the environment.
SpaceX plans to develop a 125,000-acre Starbase Louisiana site on Pecan Island.
Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with the first Starship launch targeted for 2029.
The facility could eventually support thousands of Starship launches annually.
Louisiana officials expect the project to create more than 3,000 jobs averaging about $92,600 annually.
The protected wildlife habitat faces environmental scrutiny, although SpaceX says much of the area will remain wetlands.

Wildlife and wetlands
Environmental concerns
The proposed site is a protected wildlife habitat and an important stop for migratory birds, so the project is likely to face environmental scrutiny.
SpaceX and project proponents
Gwynne Shotwell said large portions of the property would remain natural wetlands and that SpaceX would support environmental protection and restoration.
Economic impact
Environmental concerns
The articles do not provide a detailed response from environmental critics about the project's economic benefits.
SpaceX and project proponents
Louisiana officials say the development could create more than 3,000 jobs with an average salary of about $92,600.
Expansion of Starship operations
Environmental concerns
The project's planned scale depends on overcoming significant engineering and regulatory challenges.
SpaceX and project proponents
SpaceX says the site would provide infrastructure for high-frequency launches, satellite deployment, and Starship's future role in NASA's Artemis program.
