8th Pay Commission Approved with Pension Hikes
The Indian government has approved the 8th Pay Commission, which will start on 1 January 2026.
This commission will change the salaries and pensions of government workers and retirees.
Pensions might go up to ₹20,000 from ₹9,000, depending on a special number called the fitment factor.
This factor is like a multiplier that makes pensions higher.
Family pensions will also increase.
The exact changes are not final yet, but they could help about 1 crore people.
The goal is to make sure pensions keep up with the cost of living while not spending too much government money.
Serving employees are hopeful for a meaningful salary bump, while pensioners are watching for a favourable fitment factor that could raise pensions and generate sizeable arrears.
The 8th Pay Commission has been approved by the Union Cabinet, effective from 1 January 2026.
Pensions are expected to increase, with the minimum pension potentially rising to ₹20,000 from ₹9,000.
The fitment factor, a multiplier for basic pay and pension, will determine the exact increase, with estimates ranging from 1.83 to 2.57.
Family pensions, typically 30% of the basic pension, will also increase due to the fitment factor.
The changes will affect nearly 1 crore central government employees and retirees.
