Assam to Fence Grazing Lands
There was a fight in Assam between two groups, the Karbi people and the Bihari people, over land.
Two people died and many were hurt.
The leader of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, said the government will ask the court to make a quick decision about who can use the land.
A meeting was held to talk about the problem and make a plan to stop more fights.
The government will give money to the family of the person who died, and the land will be fenced to keep people from using it the wrong way.
Another meeting will be held in January to talk more about the problem.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the government will seek an early ruling from the Gauhati High Court on the stay order regarding eviction in grazing lands.
A tripartite meeting was held between the state government, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), and protestors demanding the clearing of encroached grazing lands.
Two people were killed and 70 injured in the violence between the indigenous Karbi and Bihari communities over land encroachment.
The government will provide an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the person killed in police firing and offer a job to a family member.
It was decided to fence about 8,000 bighas of vacant grazing lands and cancel trade licenses issued to business establishments in the grazing lands.
