Villagers along India-Bangladesh border oppose fresh BSF survey

Villagers along India-Bangladesh border oppose fresh BSF survey

There is an invisible line on a map that separates two countries, India and Bangladesh.

The government wants to build a tall fence along the parts of this line that are still open.

In a place called South Berubari, in the Jalpaiguri district of India, many families live very close to this line.

Last year, local government officials measured the land and promised that people's houses would stay on the Indian side of the fence.

The villagers were relieved, and some even started building new houses with money sent by family members working far away.

Now, a border security group called the BSF is measuring the land again, with a different method.

The villagers are afraid that the new measurements could put around 80 houses, home to more than 400 people, on the Bangladesh side of the fence.

They feel worried and confused because the first measurement had made their homes safe.

The villagers met on Sunday and decided to ask the district magistrate for help so their homes stay in India.
