Orissa High Court Upholds Divorce, Raises Alimony to Rs 25 Lakh

Orissa High Court Upholds Divorce, Raises Alimony to Rs 25 Lakh

A couple asked the courts to decide whether their marriage should end.

The husband had sought a divorce, saying the relationship had become cruel and difficult.

The wife challenged the divorce and raised concerns about how her allegations were considered.

The Orissa High Court agreed that the divorce should stand.

It pointed to the couple’s long separation, lack of communication and unsuccessful efforts to reconcile.

The court said having different lifestyles or financial backgrounds is not, by itself, cruelty.

It also considered the wife’s qualifications and unemployment, along with the husband’s income, expenses and debts.

The court increased her permanent alimony from Rs 16 lakh to Rs 25 lakh.

The report gives conflicting dates, saying the marriage was in July 2017 but separation began in February 2017.
