India's Largest Hydro Project Risks Elephant Corridor
India's biggest hydroelectric power project, the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Power Project, has started sending power to the national grid.
This is a big step for India's energy plans.
However, there are serious concerns about the project's impact on elephants.
The project is near an important elephant corridor, a path that elephants use to move between different areas.
Experts warn that the sudden releases of water from the dam, called hydropeaking, could make it dangerous for elephants, especially baby elephants, to cross the river.
They say the dam operators should wait to do hydropeaking until they study how it affects the elephants.
But so far, the dam operators have not done this study, and the project is still moving forward.
People who live near the river are also worried because the changes in water flow could affect their lives and the animals that depend on the river.
India's largest hydroelectric project, the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Power Project, has completed test synchronization of 250 MW.
The project is located near a critical elephant corridor on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.
The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) warns that hydropeaking could disrupt elephant movement and habitat.
The WII recommends restraining hydropeaking until a multi-seasonal hydrological study is completed.
The NHPC has not commissioned the study, and the project is set for full completion by March 2027.
