Why Soil Is Brown: Humus, Iron, and Earth’s Colour

Soil is often brown because it contains two important ingredients.

The first is humus, which forms when dead plants, animals, and tiny organisms break down.

Humus is dark because it contains a lot of carbon.

The second ingredient is iron in the soil.

Iron can react with air and water, much like metal rusts, creating red, yellow, and brown colours.

Different amounts of humus, water, oxygen, and minerals make soils different colours.

Dark soil often has lots of organic material, while gray soil may have too much water.

Pale soil may contain salt or sand and may have fewer nutrients.
