Tata, SP Group Weigh Share Swap, Buyout for Tata Stake

Tata, SP Group Weigh Share Swap, Buyout for Tata Stake

The Shapoorji Pallonji Group owns 18.4% of Tata Sons, a company at the center of the Tata Group.

It wants to turn some or all of that ownership into money to help repay expensive debt.

One idea is to exchange its Tata Sons stake for shares in public Tata companies, such as Tata Power.

Another idea is for Tata Sons to buy the stake using money borrowed from overseas banks.

A third option is selling the stake to an international investor.

Noel Tata and his representatives are involved in the discussions.

Noel chairs Tata Trusts, which owns 66% of Tata Sons, and is related by marriage to the Shapoorji Pallonji family.

The groups still need to agree on Tata Sons’ value and examine legal and regulatory issues.

The talks may fail or change, while the SP Group faces a first bond interest payment in July 2028.
