Bypoll Counting Shows BJP Leads, AIADMK and TVK Ahead
Officials were counting votes in by-elections in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry.
In Assam, BJP candidate Devashish Sharma was ahead in the Nagaon race.
One report gave him a lead of 43,418 votes, while a later report said his lead had grown to 75,248.
In West Bengal, BJP candidates were ahead in Nandigram and Rejinagar, but those figures came from news-channel trends and had not been officially confirmed.
In Tamil Nadu, the AIADMK candidate was ahead in Dharapuram, and the TVK candidate was ahead in Madurantakam.
Counting in Madurantakam stopped briefly because of a technical problem and then started again.
In Puducherry, the AINRC candidate was ahead in Thattanchavady.
These were leads during counting, not final results in the reports.
In Assam’s Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll, BJP candidate Devashish Sharma led AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal by 75,248 votes, according to the Election Commission figures in the later report.
Reports gave different Nagaon vote totals: an earlier account listed Sharma’s lead as 43,418 votes, while the later account reported Sharma with 181,017 votes and Ajmal with 105,769.
In West Bengal, BJP candidates Hasirani Rath and Sakharav Sarkar led in Nandigram and Rejinagar, respectively; the cited leads were based on news-channel trends, not confirmed Election Commission figures.
In Tamil Nadu, AIADMK candidate K Bhanumathi led in Dharapuram, while TVK candidate Maragatham Kumaravel led in Madurantakam; counting there briefly paused because of a technical glitch.
