EPFO Auto-Refunds: 1.18 Lakh Dormant Accounts Verified
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) in India has found 1.18 lakh out of 7.11 lakh inactive accounts with less than ₹1,000.
These accounts have been inactive for years, and the money has been lying unused.
The government wants to automatically return this money to the account holders.
They have started a pilot project to do this, and it is expected to be ready by August 2026.
The EPFO has been working with a research group called C-DAC to upgrade their software so that the money can be directly credited to the account holders' bank accounts.
This will help people get their money back without having to go through a lot of paperwork.
The government plans to expand this to more accounts in the future.
EPFO has traced 1.18 lakh out of 7.11 lakh dormant accounts with balances under ₹1,000.
The government aims to auto-refund these amounts to subscribers without requiring applications.
The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) is upgrading software for auto-credit of EPF amounts.
The pilot project started on February 23, 2026, and is expected to be completed by August 2026.
The government plans to expand the scheme to 24.76 lakh more subscribers with balances over ₹1,000.
