Kerala to abolish backbenches and reduce schoolbag weight
Kerala’s Education Department has decided to make some big changes in schools starting next year.
They want to get rid of the idea of backbenches, where some students sit at the back of the class and might not get as much attention.
Instead, they will arrange the seats in a semi-circle or horseshoe shape so that all students can see and interact with the teacher easily.
This idea came from a movie called 'Sthanarthi Sreekuttan' where a student named Sreekuttan rebels against the traditional seating arrangement.
The department also wants to make schoolbags lighter so that students don't have to carry heavy loads.
They will look at what students can physically handle and make changes accordingly.
Before making these changes official, they will ask for opinions from everyone involved, like teachers and parents, to make sure the new rules are fair and helpful for all students.
Kerala’s Education Department will abolish backbenches and reduce schoolbag weight starting June 2026.
The new seating arrangement will be a horseshoe or semi-circle layout to ensure equal attention for all students.
The idea was inspired by the 2024 Malayalam film 'Sthanarthi Sreekuttan', which features a backbencher revolting against traditional seating.
The changes aim to create a more child-friendly and democratic academic atmosphere.
The draft recommendations will be made public to gather feedback from stakeholders before final implementation.
