Simplified Income Tax Act, 2025, Effective April 1
The Income Tax Act, 2025, is a new law that will replace the old one from 1961.
It starts on April 1, 2026, and makes tax rules easier to understand.
The new law is shorter, with about half the number of sections, and removes old and confusing parts.
It keeps the same tax rates but simplifies the process.
Taxpayers can claim refunds for TDS even if they file their taxes late.
The government approved this new law in August 2025, and the rules for how it works will be announced after the 2027 budget.
This change is happening because the old law was very complicated and needed an update to fit today's society and technology.
The Income Tax Act, 2025, will come into force on April 1, 2026, replacing the 1961 Act.
The new law is revenue neutral with no change in tax rates but simplifies direct tax laws, reducing ambiguities and litigation scope.
It reduces the text volume and sections by about 50% compared to the 1961 Act.
The new law introduces a single 'tax year' framework and allows taxpayers to claim TDS refunds even if ITRs are filed late.
Changes announced in the 2026-27 Budget will be incorporated into the new I-T Act, 2025.
