Gujarat HC rejects Kejriwal, Singh's pleas for separate trials in defamation case
The Gujarat High Court has decided that two leaders from the AAP party, Arvind Kejriwal and Sanjay Singh, must face a defamation case together.
They were accused of making sarcastic and hurtful comments about Gujarat University in relation to PM Modi's degree.
The leaders wanted separate trials, but the court said their actions were connected and had a common purpose.
The case started when the university registrar complained about their remarks, which were made during press conferences and on social media.
The court found enough evidence to proceed with the defamation case against them.
The court also noted that the acts of the AAP leaders indicated a continuity of action, qualifying them for a joint trial under the provisions of Section 223 of the Code for Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
Gujarat High Court dismissed AAP leaders' pleas for separate trials in a defamation case.
Case involves remarks about PM Modi's degree made by Arvind Kejriwal and Sanjay Singh.
Court observed that the leaders' actions were connected and had a common purpose.
Remarks were made in April 2023 and were deemed sarcastic and defamatory.
