MoSPI to hire 10,000 contract staff for data collection
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) in India wants to hire almost 10,000 temporary workers to help collect data for various surveys.
These workers will include survey enumerators who go door-to-door, survey supervisors, and administrative support staff.
The ministry currently has about 5,500 temporary workers, but they need more because many surveys are being conducted, and there is a high rate of workers leaving their jobs.
The ministry has faced challenges in finding local staff who speak the local language fluently, which is important for accurate data collection.
The plan to hire more temporary workers goes against a recommendation from a parliamentary committee that suggested the ministry should hire permanent staff instead of relying on temporary workers.
The ministry has not responded to requests for comment.
MoSPI plans to hire 9,888 contract staff, including survey enumerators, supervisors, and administrative support staff.
The estimated cost for this hiring is Rs 968.92 crore for a 2-year contract, potentially extendable to 3 years.
The ministry currently has around 5,500 contract workers, whose terms will end on March 31.
The high attrition rate among Junior Statistical Officers (JSOs) and the increasing number of surveys have led to a reliance on contract staff.
The parliamentary committee recommended hiring permanent staff instead of relying on temporary workers to address the manpower shortage.
