Trump Pushes Canada Toward Europe and Economic Diversification

Trump Pushes Canada Toward Europe and Economic Diversification

Canada has depended heavily on the United States for trade for about 40 years.

President Donald Trump has used tariffs and other demands to pressure Canada.

Prime Minister Mark Carney now wants Canada to build stronger trade relationships with Europe and other countries.

He says this would give Canada more choices and protect its ability to make its own decisions.

Carney has discussed a closer relationship with the European Union, but a formal associate-member status does not yet exist.

Europe is an important possible partner, but it cannot quickly replace the United States as a buyer of Canadian goods.

Canadian officials say they still want to do business with America.

They also say Canada should no longer rely on just one major economic partner.
