Baidu and Biren AI Chip Units Surge in Hong Kong Listings
Baidu, a big Chinese internet company, has a special part called Kunlunxin that makes AI chips.
They have asked to be listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange, which means they want to sell shares to the public.
This is like when a kid wants to start their own lemonade stand but still gets help from their parents.
Kunlunxin was valued at $3 billion and mainly sells chips to Baidu but is also selling to other companies.
Another company, Shanghai Biren Technology, also makes AI chips and had a very successful start on the Hong Kong stock exchange, with their shares going up by 82%.
This shows that many people are interested in buying shares of companies that make AI chips.
China wants to make its own chips because the U.S. has rules that make it hard to get advanced chips from there.
Other Chinese companies are also doing this, and Hong Kong had a really good year for new listings, raising a lot of money.
Kunlunxin will still be part of Baidu but will operate more independently.
Baidu's AI chip unit Kunlunxin filed for a Hong Kong listing on January 1, 2025.
Kunlunxin was valued at 21 billion yuan ($3 billion) in a recent fundraising round.
Shanghai Biren Technology's shares surged 82% on their Hong Kong debut on January 2, 2026.
Biren raised HK$5.58 billion through its IPO, with strong institutional and retail demand.
China is promoting domestic semiconductor development due to U.S. export restrictions.
