Delhi HC Orders Standards for Diagnostic Sample Handling
Imagine doctors need to send your blood or other samples to a lab.
Right now, there aren't always strict rules about how they should do this.
A doctor asked the court to make sure everyone follows the same rules for collecting and sending these samples.
This is important because if samples aren't handled properly, the test results might be wrong.
The government is now making these rules, which will cover things like how the samples are packaged and sent.
These rules will ensure that the samples reach the labs safely.
The court is pushing the government to finalize these rules soon, hopefully in the next few months, so that everyone in India can follow the rules.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) is preparing to notify minimum clinical standards for handling and transporting diagnostic samples.
This follows a Delhi High Court order from January 2023, concerning a petition by Dr. Rohit Jain.
Dr. Jain's petition highlighted the lack of action on implementing minimum standards for sample collection and transport.
The MoHFW stated ICMR-NIV guidelines are currently in place for high-risk pathogens and COVID-19 samples.
The court directed the MoHFW to notify the standards expeditiously, aiming for completion within three months.
