Isaias Threatens Gulf Energy Operations as Producers Shut Output

Isaias became the first hurricane in the Atlantic in 2026.

It was moving toward the northern Gulf Coast.

The National Hurricane Center reported winds of 75 miles per hour, while another report gave a reading of about 80 miles per hour early Thursday.

Energy companies stopped some oil and gas production and moved workers away from offshore platforms.

By Wednesday, about one quarter of Gulf oil production and about one sixth of its natural gas production was offline.

Companies shut wells to help protect equipment and prevent leaks.

If facilities are safe after the storm, some production may restart after inspections.

Damage to refineries or other equipment could keep them closed longer.

The storm’s final effect on energy supplies depends on its path and how long facilities are offline.
