NRI Taxation on Life Insurance Maturity Payouts
When an Indian Non-Resident (NRI) gets money from a life insurance policy in India, the tax rules depend on how much they paid and if the policy meets certain rules.
If it does, the money is tax-free.
If not, it's taxed like other income.
From 2025, policies bought from special financial centers have easier rules.
NRIs can also use special tax treaties to pay less tax.
They must file a tax return if they owe tax.
Maturity payouts from life insurance policies can be tax-free for NRIs under certain conditions
Payouts exceeding limits or not meeting conditions are taxable for NRIs
IFSC-issued policies have relaxed limits for exemption from 1 April 2025
DTAA can provide relief for NRIs on taxable maturity payouts
