Karnataka CM warns of shift to coercive centralism
Karnataka's Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, spoke at a conference in Bengaluru.
He said that India is moving away from a system where the central government and states work together (cooperative federalism) to a system where the central government makes decisions and forces states to follow them (coercive centralism).
He believes this is a threat to India's democracy.
He also talked about a plan to change how seats in the national government are divided, which he thinks will hurt South Indian states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.
He said these states have done well in controlling population growth and improving education and health, but now they might lose political representation because of their success.
He warned that this could lead to South India being politically sidelined in its own country.
Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah warns of a shift from cooperative federalism to coercive centralism in India.
He claims decisions are made in Delhi and imposed on states, suffocating local realities.
Siddaramaiah alleges the BJP-led union government is dismantling fiscal federalism and penalizing successful states.
He warns that proposed delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies could politically marginalize South Indian states.
The CM argues that representation should not be a reward for failure or a penalty for success.
