Bypoll Counting Begins Across Six Seats as Early Leads Vary
Votes were counted on October 9 in six by-elections in four parts of India.
Five races were for state Assembly seats, and one was for a seat in the national Parliament.
Tamil Nadu’s two races were closely watched because they could offer an early test of Chief Minister Vijay’s party.
Reports disagreed about who was ahead in Tamil Nadu: one said TVK led in both seats, while another said AIADMK led in Dharapuram.
Early reports said BJP candidates were ahead in two West Bengal seats and in Assam’s Nagaon seat.
In Puducherry, an AINRC candidate was reported ahead.
The candidates and parties were competing to fill seats that had become vacant.
These were early counting updates, not final results, and the leads could change as counting continued.
Counting began on October 9 for five Assembly by-elections and one Lok Sabha by-election across Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Puducherry and Assam.
Tamil Nadu’s Madurantakam and Dharapuram contests are being watched as an early test for Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s TVK government, which won 108 Assembly seats against 118 needed for a majority.
Tamil Nadu reports differed on early trends: one said TVK led in both seats, while another said AIADMK led in Dharapuram; the figures were provisional.
BJP candidates were reported ahead in West Bengal’s Nandigram and Rejinagar and Assam’s Nagaon, while AINRC candidate Ashok Anand led in Puducherry’s Thattanchavady.
Turnout reports put Madurantakam at about 86%, Dharapuram at about 80%, Nandigram at 80.89%, Rejinagar at around 80%, Thattanchavady at 80.81% and Nagaon at 76.19%.
