Oscar-Nominated Screenwriter Arrested in Tehran

Mehdi Mahmoudian, a screenwriter for the Oscar-nominated film 'It Was Just an Accident,' was arrested in Tehran.

He and 16 others signed a statement criticizing the Iranian government's violent actions against protesters.

The statement condemned mass killings, the use of live ammunition, and the systematic persecution of protesters.

Two other signatories, Vida Rabbani and Abdullah Momeni, were also arrested.

The film's director, Jafar Panahi, spoke out against Mahmoudian's arrest, calling him a moral presence.

Panahi described Mahmoudian as a witness, a listener, and a rare moral presence.

The film is nominated for best screenplay and best international film at the Oscars.
