William Faulkner's Difficult Novels Reward Patient, Slow Reading
William Faulkner wrote novels that can be hard to understand at first.
His stories may jump between different times without warning.
The people telling the stories may disagree with one another.
Some sentences are very long.
Important facts may appear much later than readers expect.
This can make the books feel frustrating.
However, the difficulty has a purpose.
Reading slowly and patiently can help readers appreciate his novels more.
William Faulkner’s fiction often challenges readers with shifting time and contradictory narrators.
His sentences can stretch across pages, making key information difficult to find immediately.
Readers accustomed to clarity and momentum may initially find his novels hostile or frustrating.
Faulkner’s difficulty is presented as purposeful rather than merely decorative.
His most demanding novels reward patient, careful reading, especially on his birthday, September 25.
