Nepal Flash Flood Death Toll Reports Diverge as Rescue Continues

A very large flood suddenly hit parts of Nepal on Wednesday.

It began after ice and rocks blocked a river near the border with China.

The water rushed through Timure and then moved downstream along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems.

Many people, vehicles and buildings were swept away.

Reports gave different death tolls, ranging from 162 recovered bodies to 270 deaths.

Hundreds or thousands of people were still missing or out of contact, including Indian tourists, Nepali tourists, workers and security personnel.

Rescue teams have saved more than 800 stranded people, including injured survivors.

Helicopters, soldiers and teams on foot are searching for more people and delivering food, tents and medicines.

Roads and bridges were damaged, making the rescue effort more difficult.
