Bangladesh curbs power use amid gas shortages and Iran crisis

Bangladesh is a country that needs a lot of electricity to keep homes and businesses running.

Most of that electricity is made using natural gas.

Lately, Bangladesh does not have enough gas, so it cannot make enough electricity.

When everyone needs power the most, the country is several hundred megawatts short.

To save electricity, the government made a new rule: shops and malls must close by 8 o'clock in the evening, one hour earlier than before.

Stores can now only be open from 11 in the morning until 8 at night.

Hospitals, pharmacies and food shops are allowed to stay open because people need them.

A big conflict in Iran is also making fuel more expensive around the world.

That makes it harder and more costly for Bangladesh to buy the gas it imports from other countries, so saving power has become very important.
