Tripura High Court Upholds Cases Over Abusive PM Posts

A content creator in Tripura asked the High Court to cancel criminal cases against her.

The cases involve social-media comments about India’s Prime Minister, Agartala’s mayor and Mata Tripureshwari.

She said her comments were opinions protected by free speech.

The government said the comments were deliberately insulting and hurt people’s sentiments.

The court said people may criticize political leaders.

However, it said free speech does not protect abusive, defamatory or malicious posts.

The court therefore allowed the cases to continue.

It did not decide her final guilt or innocence.
