India to Develop Gene-Edited Pulses to Boost Production
India wants to grow more of its own beans, like tur, urad, and masoor.
They have a new plan called the 'Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses' that will last for six years.
During this time, they plan to create 15 new types of these beans using a special gene-editing technique.
These new beans are expected to grow more food, be ready faster, and be tougher against bad weather and bugs.
The government is putting a lot of money into this mission to help scientists create these improved bean varieties.
The goal is to produce a lot more beans in the country by 2031.
This plan comes after there were some questions about other gene-edited rice varieties that were recently released, with some groups saying the success claims were exaggerated.
India plans to develop 15 genome-edited varieties of tur, urad, and masoor pulses over six years.
This initiative is part of the 'Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses' with a financial outlay of Rs 11,440 crore.
The mission aims to increase total pulse production by 45% by 2030-31.
The new varieties are intended to be high-yielding, short-duration, climate-resilient, and pest-resistant.
The plan follows recent controversies regarding the data presented for two gene-edited rice varieties released by ICAR.
- Who
- The Indian government, specifically the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
- What
- Plans to develop and release 15 genome-edited varieties of three pulses (tur, urad, and masoor) under the 'Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses' to increase production, area, and yield.
- When
- Over the next six years, from 2025-26 to 2030-31.
- Where
- India.
- Why
- To boost self-sufficiency in pulse production, increase crop yields, enhance climate resilience, and improve pest resistance.

Data Integrity of Gene-Edited Varieties
Coalition for a GM-Free India
Alleged that ICAR 'rigged and hyped' test data for Pusa DST-1 and DRR Dhan 100 rice varieties, making false claims of success.
Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)
Rejected allegations as 'baseless and motivated by an anti-development agenda', stating detailed responses and clarifications have been provided.
Biosafety Regulations and Oversight
Coalition for a GM-Free India
Demands a moratorium on genome-edited crop releases until credible biosafety regulations and independent oversight mechanisms are in place.
Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)
Defends the scientific integrity and rigorous evaluation process for its developed varieties, implicitly suggesting current oversight is adequate.
