Iran Rejects Trump’s Claim to Control Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz is an important waterway between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula.

Many ships carrying energy supplies usually travel through it.

Donald Trump said the United States controlled the strait and shared a computer-made map calling it new U.S. territory.

He also said the strait was open, even though a naval blockade remained in place.

Iranian officials said Trump’s claims were unrealistic and mocked his map.

Iran’s consulate in India made its own joke by labeling California Iranian territory.

Iran’s parliament speaker said the strait would stay closed until the United States met several demands.

The demands included ending the blockade, releasing frozen Iranian assets, and lifting oil sanctions.

The disagreement has disrupted shipping and contributed to higher oil prices.
