US Climate Centre Sees 75% Chance of Historic El Niño

Scientists think a very strong El Niño may develop.

El Niño is a climate pattern involving unusually warm ocean water in the Pacific.

The US Climate Prediction Center estimates a 75% chance of an especially strong event.

Ocean water in the eastern Pacific is already more than 3°C warmer than average.

Winds, rainfall, and warmer water below the surface also suggest that the event is strengthening.

The highest chance of a very strong El Niño is expected between September-November and November-January.

El Niño often brings hotter and drier weather to India.

However, a stronger El Niño does not always cause equally stronger weather effects.
