Free Bus Travel Boosts Women's Ridership in Andhra Pradesh
The government of Andhra Pradesh started a program where women can ride APSRTC buses for free.
This began on August 15.
Because of this, more women are using the buses, increasing how full they are.
On average, 80% of the seats on buses that allow free travel for women are filled each day.
Initially, there were some problems like overcrowding and minor injuries.
However, the free travel program, known as Stree Shakti, is largely successful.
The government pays the RTC for the free rides.
Women can also travel for free on some routes to visit temples.
Andhra Pradesh offers free bus travel for women, starting August 15.
Overall bus occupancy increased from 69% to 74%.
8,400 buses provide free travel for women.
Buses allowing free travel see an average of 80% occupancy per day.
The government reimburses the RTC for the free rides.
