Sri Lanka's Supreme Court Allows Objections to India MoUs
The Supreme Court in Sri Lanka is allowing people to challenge agreements (MoUs) made with India.
Some groups believe their rights were violated because they weren't told what was in these agreements, which cover things like defense and digital solutions.
The court has decided that the government can now explain why they made these agreements, and the people who filed the complaints can respond.
This all started with several agreements signed in April between the two countries.
The petitioners are concerned that their rights and the country's sovereignty were not respected, as the contents of the MoUs weren't shared publicly.
Sri Lanka's Supreme Court allowed objections to rights petitions concerning MoUs with India.
The Attorney General can now file objections, and petitioners can submit counter-objections.
Seven MoUs, including defense cooperation, were signed between India and Sri Lanka in April.
Petitions from nationalist groups cited violations of fundamental rights.
Petitioners claim the government erred by not disclosing the MOUs contents in parliament.
