India Blocks Private Radio News, Sparks Debate

India Blocks Private Radio News, Sparks Debate

India has a rule that says private radio stations can only play music and talk shows, not news.

This rule has been around for more than twenty years.

A group called Common Cause asked the Supreme Court to change it in 2013, but the court hasn't decided yet.

The government says it wants to stop bad or false news from spreading.

Other countries like the UK, Australia, Canada, and the US let private radio stations report news, but India keeps them quiet.

Because of this, radio in India is losing listeners to music apps and podcasts.

The rule also stops radio from telling people about local elections, weather, or health alerts.

The writer thinks India should let radio do more than just play songs.
