EU, Vietnam Elevate Ties Amid Global Challenges
The European Union and Vietnam have decided to work more closely together.
They have upgraded their diplomatic relations, which means they will have more meetings and discussions.
This is important because both countries are facing challenges with higher taxes on their exports to the United States.
They want to support each other and follow international rules.
They will work together in areas like defence, special minerals, computer chips, and building better transport systems.
Even though they have different views on some issues, like the war in Ukraine and human rights, they agree on the importance of working together and respecting each other's independence and borders.
This agreement shows that Vietnam is trying to work with more countries, not just China.
Vietnam and the EU elevated diplomatic relations to the highest level, similar to those with the US, China, and Russia.
The upgrade includes no binding commitments but carries significant political weight, especially amid global disruptions and higher US export levies.
Both sides will explore and deepen cooperation in defence, critical minerals, semiconductors, transport, and trusted communications infrastructure.
The EU acknowledged differing views with Vietnam on the war in Ukraine and human rights but agreed on supporting multilateralism and principles of independence, territorial integrity, and sovereignty.
The upgrade is expected to generate a stronger partnership and more frequent high-level meetings between the two sides.
