Bangladesh Weighs Mecca Pact Amid Foreign Policy Test

Bangladesh is thinking about joining a new security agreement called the Mecca pact.

Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan signed the agreement in Mecca this month.

It says an attack on one member would be treated as an attack on all members.

A Bangladeshi minister said the country was viewing participation positively.

Saudi Arabia reportedly invited Bangladesh to join.

Turkey has said the pact could accept more members.

Experts say joining could make Bangladesh’s relationships with India and other countries more difficult.

Bangladesh depends on international trade and money sent home by workers abroad.

Its leaders must weigh possible security cooperation against the risks of appearing to choose one geopolitical side.
