S&P Upgrades India's Insolvency Regime to Group B
S&P Global Ratings has moved India's insolvency regime ranking up from Group C to Group B. This means that the process of dealing with companies that can't pay their debts has gotten better.
Now, creditors (the people or companies that are owed money) get back more of their money, and the process is faster.
However, there are still some problems.
The recovery rates (the amount of money creditors get back) are still lower than in some other countries, and there can be delays due to legal challenges.
The upgrade also affects how S&P gives ratings to companies that are at risk of not being able to pay their debts.
Overall, this change shows that India's system for handling bankrupt companies is improving, but there's still room for more improvement.
S&P Global Ratings upgraded India's insolvency regime ranking from Group C to Group B.
Average recovery rates for creditors have improved to more than 30%, up from 15-20% under the previous regime.
The average resolution time for bad loans has decreased to about two years, down from six to eight years.
Concerns remain about low recovery rates compared to more established jurisdictions and unpredictability in the resolution process.
The upgrade affects how S&P assigns recovery ratings and issue ratings for sub-investment grade issuers.
