West Bengal Underutilizes Jal Jeevan Mission Funds
The Indian government has a program called Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) to provide tap water to every rural household.
The government said that West Bengal did not get all the money it was supposed to because the state was slow in sending the required documents.
The government has given West Bengal Rs 13,027.84 crore out of the Rs 24,645 crore allocated, but the state has spent Rs 15,101.35 crore in total.
The West Bengal government says the central government owes them Rs 2,525 crore.
The program has been extended to 2028, but more funds will only be released after approval.
West Bengal drew lesser funds under JJM due to delay in submission of proposals.
Central allocation for West Bengal was Rs 24,645 crore, but only Rs 13,027.84 crore was drawn.
West Bengal claims the Centre owes Rs 2,525 crore under JJM, with no funds released since August 2024.
JJM has been extended till December 2028 with an enhanced outlay, but further grants require approval.
As of December 15, 2025, 81.42% of rural households in India and 56.46% in West Bengal have tap water connections.
