ICE Arrests Spouses During Green Card Interviews
Imagine going to a routine green card interview and ending up in handcuffs.
This is now happening in the US, where Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has started arresting people during their green card interviews.
These individuals are spouses of US citizens who have overstayed their visas, even if they entered the US legally and have no criminal history.
Lawyers say this is a new policy where ICE arrests visa overstays at these interviews.
Many of these arrests have happened in San Diego, and some involved pregnant women and even a baby.
The government says these arrests happen if there are warrants, removal orders, or immigration violations.
Lawyers advise people to still go to their interviews but be prepared for possible arrest.
ICE has started arresting foreign spouses of US citizens during green card interviews for overstaying visas.
At least several dozen detentions have occurred in San Diego since November 12, 2023.
Arrests have involved individuals with no criminal history, including pregnant women and a baby.
USCIS spokesperson Matthew J Tragesser stated arrests occur if there are warrants, removal orders, or immigration violations.
Lawyers advise applicants to attend interviews but be prepared for possible arrest.
