A doctors’ group has complained to police about leaders of the West Bengal Medical Council.

The group says some people who were not real doctors received registrations that allowed them to practice.

It also says council officials may have helped create registrations and could have destroyed evidence.

Five alleged fake doctors recently had their registrations cancelled after being arrested.

Another doctors’ group has also approached police.

The accused officials deny the allegations.

Former council chief Nirmal Maji says he previously helped investigate and arrest about 200 fake doctors.

Rajiv Pandey

Secretary of the Association of Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes and complainant

“This allegation does not apply to me. While I was president of the Medical Council, I had the DIG–CID conduct an investigation and got around 200 fake doctors arrested. That happened only during my tenure as president. I despise such acts.”

“Why didn’t the West Bengal Medical Council take any active steps to catch fake doctors? One after another, fake doctors not only practiced in the state, but also got themselves registered as doctors under the Swasthya Sathi scheme.”
