CU colleges demand PG autonomy restoration
Some colleges under Calcutta University want to be in charge of their own postgraduate courses again.
They say that since the university took control in 2018, the quality of education has gone down.
The colleges want to make their own syllabus, set their own exams, and choose their own evaluators.
The university, however, says that some colleges misused their autonomy in the past, which is why they took control.
The new vice-chancellor is looking into the demands.
Principals of government and government-aided colleges under Calcutta University have urged the new vice-chancellor to restore their autonomy in running postgraduate programs.
Colleges like Lady Brabourne and Asutosh College claim that the university's control over PG exams and syllabi has weakened academic standards.
Before 2018, colleges had full authority over their PG programs, including designing syllabi and setting exams.
The university withdrew autonomy due to allegations of misuse, such as manipulating evaluations and admitting students beyond sanctioned strength.
Some institutions under Calcutta University, like Ramakrishna Mission colleges and St Xavier’s College, already function autonomously and have introduced new courses.
