India Expands Semiconductor Mission to Build Chips and Talent

India Expands Semiconductor Mission to Build Chips and Talent

India wants to make more computer chips inside the country.

Chips are used in cars, phones, artificial intelligence systems, and many other products.

The government has started the second phase of a chip programme worth about $13 billion.

This phase supports factories, suppliers, technology, and worker training.

India has approved 12 projects in six states.

Three companies have started commercial production, mostly assembling and testing chips.

A larger Tata Electronics and Powerchip factory in Gujarat is expected to produce its first chips in December.

India also wants to use its engineers and technology workers to become a major centre for chip design, not just chip manufacturing.
