Maharashtra Orders Statewide Crackdown on Illegal Sugar Hoarding

Maharashtra Orders Statewide Crackdown on Illegal Sugar Hoarding

Maharashtra wants to stop businesses from storing too much sugar and pushing prices higher.

Sugar prices reached very high levels in August.

The government is worried that hoarding could make food more expensive before the festive season.

Special teams will inspect sugar sellers, warehouses, and large users across the state.

Traders and distributors cannot keep more than 400 metric tonnes at one place.

They also cannot keep sugar for more than 30 days after receiving it.

Large factories and commercial users can keep only a 15-day supply.

Businesses must report their stock every Friday or face action under the Essential Commodities Act.
