Karnataka Congress Rift Grows Over Gadag Drought Declaration Dispute

Some parts of Karnataka have received much less rain than usual.

Farmers and leaders want Gadag and nearby taluks to be officially called drought-hit.

Former minister H K Patil said he would resign if Gadag taluk was not included by October 10.

He also said he would try to get the decision made before October 2.

Minister Basavaraj Rayareddy asked Chief Minister D K Shivakumar to include Gadag, Ron and Mundaragi.

He said these areas had rainfall shortages of 43% to 48%.

The government is checking areas in stages using official rules and local assessments.

Officials said more than 200 taluks may eventually be included on the drought list.
