RBI Allows Differential Bulk Deposit Rates, Uniform Across Branches
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said banks can charge different interest rates on big deposits (₹3 crore or more) if they think customers might withdraw more during a crisis.
But the rates must be the same at every branch and for every customer.
Banks must post the rates on their websites by 10:10 am each day.
RBI also said it will not let banks set different rates for smaller deposits.
The new rules start on 1 October 2026, and banks will also share more risk information from 1 April 2027.
RBI permits banks to set different interest rates for bulk deposits (₹3 crore+) based on run‑off risk.
Rates must be identical across all branches and customers for deposits of the same amount on the same day.
Banks must publish bulk‑deposit rates on their website by 10:10 am each business day.
RBI rejected banks’ request for standard run‑off categories and for differential rates on smaller deposits.
The new rules take effect on 1 October 2026, with additional disclosure requirements from 1 April 2027.
