Indian Navy commissions INS Mahe
The Indian Navy has added a new ship called INS Mahe to its fleet.
This ship is special because it was built in India, showing that India can make its own advanced warships.
INS Mahe is designed to find and fight submarines in shallow waters near the coast.
It is fast, quiet, and has special equipment to detect and attack underwater threats.
The ship is named after a coastal town in Puducherry and has a symbol of a flexible sword on its crest, which represents its agility and strength.
The Army Chief, General Upendra Dwivedi, was present at the ceremony and praised the ship's construction and the Navy's efforts to build its own ships.
This new ship will help protect India's coastal areas and work with other naval assets to keep the seas safe.
The ship's mascot is a cheetah, which symbolizes speed and focus.
The commissioning of INS Mahe marks a significant step in India's efforts to strengthen its naval capabilities and promote self-reliance in defence.
INS Mahe is the first of eight Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW SWC) built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL).
The vessel is 78 metres long, displaces 1,100 tonnes, and can reach speeds of up to 25 knots with a range of 1,800 nautical miles.
Equipped with advanced sonar systems, torpedo launchers, and anti-submarine rocket systems, INS Mahe is designed for shallow-water operations and coastal defence.
Over 80-90% of the ship's components are indigenous, reflecting India's growing capability in warship construction and self-reliance in defence.
INS Mahe is named after the coastal town of Mahe in Puducherry and features the 'Urumi' on its crest, symbolising agility, precision, and lethal grace.
