Indian Football 'Excellent Progress' Claim Draws Sharp Online Backlash
The Sports Minister of India said that football in India is doing very well.
He said a big football league called the ISL will come back.
He also said new football teams are being created.
The government plans to spend 36,000 crore rupees on sports schools where retired athletes will teach.
But many people on the internet did not agree with him.
They said Indian football has a lot of problems.
The Indian team is ranked number 138 in the world and did not get into a big Asian competition.
Some football clubs are even closing down, like Jamshedpur FC.
So many fans think the minister's happy words do not match what is really happening.
Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said Indian football is making 'excellent progress,' with the ISL to be hosted again and new clubs being formed.
He said the government's Rs 36,000 crore package will promote an academy culture, with academies run by retired athletes.
His remarks drew sharp online reactions, including users asking 'which alternate reality?' and calling the assessment 'far from the truth.'
Critics cited India's FIFA ranking of 138, failure to qualify for the men's premier continental competition, and clubs shutting down due to high participation fees levied by AIFF.
Tata Steel's decision to withdraw Jamshedpur FC from the ISL for the 2026-27 season and the Ranjit Bajaj-Bibiano Fernandes fiasco were raised as counterexamples.
