Ashok Lavasa Criticizes EC Legal Immunity
Ashok Lavasa, a former election commissioner, recently spoke about the importance of accountability in the Election Commission.
He criticized a new law that gives election commissioners special protection from court cases.
He said this protection is unusual and not given to other public servants.
Lavasa also talked about a process called the Summary of Electoral Roll (SIR), which removes voters' names if they don't submit a form.
He thinks this process is not fair and can be done in a simpler way.
Other speakers, like Maj.
Gen.
Anil Verma and K.C. Tyagi, also shared their views on these topics.
Former election commissioner Ashok Lavasa criticized the legal immunity granted to election commissioners under the 2023 law.
He argued that accountability is paramount in a democracy and such legal shields should not exist.
Lavasa also discussed the Summary of Electoral Roll (SIR) process, stating it is not fair and can be simplified.
The Supreme Court has admitted a plea against the immunity provision, which was aimed at equating ECs with Supreme Court judges.
