MP Ritabrata opposes plastic bags for food grains
A member of parliament named Ritabrata Banerjee wrote a letter to the Union Minister of Textiles.
He is upset because the government is allowing the use of plastic bags for buying and selling food grains like rice and wheat.
He thinks this is bad for two reasons.
First, it hurts the people who grow and work with jute, a natural plant fiber used to make bags.
Second, it is bad for the environment because plastic bags are not good for nature.
He says the government's excuse of not having enough jute bags is not true.
He believes the government did not plan well and did not buy enough jute bags when they were cheap.
This made the situation worse for jute farmers and workers.
He also points out that the government is saying one thing about being eco-friendly but doing another by allowing plastic bags.
Ritabrata Banerjee, a Trinamul Congress Rajya Sabha member, wrote to Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh opposing the use of plastic bags for food grain procurement.
Banerjee described the decision as a 'state-sanctioned dilution of jute' and accused the government of policy paralysis in the jute sector.
He claimed that the government's argument of jute bag scarcity was dishonest and a result of poor policy decisions.
Banerjee highlighted the adverse impact on jute farmers and workers, stating that the jute belt is experiencing economic contraction due to hostile policies.
He also raised environmental concerns, noting the contradiction in the government's stance on sustainability and single-use plastics.
