29 Gharial Hatchlings Discovered in Satkosia Tiger Reserve
Imagine some very special baby crocodiles called gharials!
Scientists found 29 of these babies on a sandy island in a place called Satkosia.
This is great news because it means the gharials are having babies in the wild.
The scientists are excited, as they are trying to protect these animals.
The survival of baby gharials is difficult, so scientists watch the area to help the baby gharials survive.
The gharial population increased by two this year, which shows they are doing better in their habitat.
Wildlife officials discovered 29 gharial hatchlings in Satkosia Tiger Reserve.
This marks the fifth consecutive year of natural gharial breeding at the same site.
The nesting site is located at Balabadamara under the Tikarpada range.
The gharial population in the Mahanadi gorge increased to 16.
The survival rate of hatchlings is very low, approximately 0.1%.
