A new institute for learning how to care for pets has opened in Pune.

It is called the Pet Care Education and Training Ecosystem, or PETE.

Its management says it is the first institute of its kind in India.

Students can learn skills such as walking dogs, grooming pets and managing boarding facilities.

PETE will offer government-recognised certificate courses.

The courses are for young people, people already working with pets and pet parents.

Maharashtra minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha said trained workers are needed as the pet care sector grows.
