Short Bouts of Office Activity Linked to Lower Diabetes Risk

Short Bouts of Office Activity Linked to Lower Diabetes Risk

Scientists wanted to know whether tiny bits of movement during the day can help keep people healthy.

They studied thousands of adults who did not do any regular exercise.

These adults wore special wrist watches that tracked how much they moved.

The scientists followed them for almost eight years.

They found that people who moved in short bursts during their workday were less likely to get type 2 diabetes.

Things like walking quickly around the office or climbing stairs counted as helpful movement.

About four minutes a day of brisk activity was linked to a 36 percent lower chance of getting diabetes.

More than 25 minutes a day of such activity was linked to a 46 percent lower chance.

A doctor said this is good news for people who cannot find time for a long morning workout.

He also reminded everyone that exercise helps reduce risk but does not replace a healthy diet and lifestyle.
